socialworkmonth Social workers are employed by many organizations throughout the United States. Their very demanding careers are necessary to the well being of our society. In almost every organization you will find a social worker. They work in hospitals, in drug rehabilitation centers, child protective services, with the military, with mental health professionals, in schools. They work with young children and with the elderly; with terminally ill individuals and with drug addicts. They are involved with human services and work to improve the way of life for so many people. For this reason and many more, let’s thank our social workers during Social Work Month in March.

At some point almost everyone will be touched by this profession. Career counseling is provided by social workers in schools as well as through occupational therapy. They also participate in family and group counseling sessions for a variety of issues. They work closely with geriatric patients to help them receive assistance for programs in the community. This can include transportation to appointments, assisted living arrangements, financial help, and medical assistance. They intervene for families in crisis to help provide emergency funds through various state programs. They are also there when there are domestic violence issues or child abuse in families. They work with individuals to protect our nation’s children and to educate families on proper discipline techniques as well as anger management. They work to reunite families and repair broken homes. They work in so many aspects and with so many individuals it is amazing the things they can accomplish.

The theme for 2010 is “Social Workers Inspire Community Action”. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is recognizing social workers with their community action heroes campaign. You can nominate an outstanding individual through their website for 2010. All nominations should include a detailed description of why the person should be recognized, what they did to improve their community and what location they cover. Nominees’ descriptions will be recognized on their website throughout the month. If you know a person who should be recognized nominate them for a community action hero.

  1. I can think of a few people I want to nominate for social work month that have made a difference. My social worker when I was a kid was the only thing that got me through my childhood. Think how horrible Jenny’s childhood was in Forest Gump movie and how that shaped her life. A social worker in your life is an angel.

  2. Sadly once again social work month is ignored in our culture. When will this be more known.
