socialworkcoverletterSocial work is a very remarkable career. If you are aspiring to work in this field, a well written social work cover letter is important. It’s the first introduction to you that an employer will have. It can also have a personal quality to it since the resume that gets distributed is generally identical from job to job application and not customized. You can use the cover letter to highlight some of your unique characteristics.

People tend to spend the majority of their efforts on creating their resume, but don’t neglect the cover letter as that can influence a future employer. It goes without saying that you want it to appear with proper spacing, grammar and spelling as this is their first impression of you. Since social work involves a lot of documentation in the form of evaluations, progress notes and letters to social service agencies, the writing should be proofed carefully.

A resumes simply state facts like your name, job history, and educational background. But a cover letter is a way for you to communicate to the hiring agent and can be a very persuasive tool.
First, you should have a clear idea of the details of the position before you start composing it. If it’s at family counseling agency and you did your internship there or have had similar job experiences you can make a short sentence alluding to that within your cover letter to highlight your suitability to the job position. You can also make a personal statement in the cover letter about something relevantly historically in your life if it’s for a setting like foster care or a drug addiction clinic.

Treat the social work cover letter like a sales pitch. You are trying to sell your skill to someone else. You are the product and no one knows more about you than you do. You also need to know what are the goals and priorities for the agency, hospital or facility. Show your love and enthusiasm as well for the population you’ll be working with and your strong interest.
