When you need to get the credit for renewing the social work license, there are a lot of interesting courses to take either online or offline. For instance, I’ve given a yoga and meditation class for 6 credits of ceus. I’ve also taken a very interesting eastern philosophy class on meditation and Patanjali.
For instance you can take a class on dealing with prescription addiction , eating disorders, adhd or working with Latino clients. There are many areas that you just don’t get to study after grad school and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about various parts of the social work field.
In the continuing education classes you take online, there is usually a pdf that you read and this enables you to prepare for the online exam. The online exam is generally multiple choice. Ptsd is an important area today and many people are getting in touch with childhood traumas.
I think the online social work classes work well when you work. In the past I’ve gone to some all day ones to cram in six or eight credits and it was hard to concentrate (especially if it’s a saturday and you worked all day friday). From now on I will do half day classes on weekends and the rest online to get the required thirty credits every 2 years that Florida requires.
I am glad to see more alternative therapy types of classes as these are very helpful for people. I even saw a class offered on St. John’s and depression. It is very interesting to see herbs, yoga, tai chi and other modalities incorporated into social work theory as these weren’t in my course work.
Yes, I too was happy to find some non-traditional ceu classes for social work license renewal that expanded my horizons. I hope you’ll also put some posts up about topics like “social work job hunting” and “social worker therapy modalities”. I am thinking of changing jobs but wasn’t sure of the best way to find a new position. Do you think online is used more than the local newspapers for social work agency jobs?
