How to Apply for the Left Handed Scholarship

lefthandedscholarships I get many e-mails and comments from people telling me of their interest in studying social work and entering into the human services field but being discouraged about how to afford this. There are some posts I have on various scholarships, but I wanted to also mention the scholarship for lefties.

Most families, even middle class, cannot afford to pay for higher education out of pocket. With the rising cost of education, scholarships are becoming not only important but necessary. Any advantage or opportunity can make the difference between going to school and not. One of the most unusual scholarships is for lefties. Not only is it important to know how to apply, but it is important to know how to write the scholarship essay.

The scholarship for lefties is actually called the Frederick and Mary F Beckley Scholarship. The scholarship is strictly for students attending Juniata College in Huntington PA. Students who have studied at the college for a year or more are eligible to participate. The only criteria for the scholarship is that the student be attending Juniata college and is left handed. All students that complete the scholarship application are asked if they are left handed however, academic achievement is important. They have a BSW program for social work. Also they have programs in psychology, human resource management and sociology as well.

Let’s discuss how to win scholarships. Anyone that has ever applied for one has learned to start early. This not only ensures you have enough time to submit the application, but it provides an opportunity to complete criteria that may not have been met. Staying organized is also an easy way to keep records handy. This would include plenty of copies of transcripts, letters of recommendations, and cover letters. While many documents will be the same for the packages you will submit, remember that each scholarship has its own set of criteria. The best packet will be slanted towards the criteria set forth for that scholarship. The easiest way to do this is to show clear proof that the applicant not only meets the set qualifications, but also exceeds them. This is why the essay should shine.

To create a great essay, we must first understand that regardless of the topic, the essay is actually about you. Research the topic given and find ways to relate yourself and your experience to the topic. While writing your essay, make sure you stay focused. Start with an outline and add in information as you go. Show your audience, don’t tell them, but make sure you stay on topic. And above all, be yourself. While you may want to exaggerate to make yourself look great, it can come back to haunt you in the end. Write about any volunteer work you’ve done, the interest you’ve had in working with others since childhood and give examples.

This can give you that extra boost to help out with the numerous expenses associated with college. Remember there are many other scholarship programs as well so apply to many types for the best as financial opportunities. Remember that Bill Clinton is a lefty!

  2. I am glad that lefties are getting some acknowledgement finally. We really do have disadvantages having to adjust to a righty world. Everything is designed for righties in our world.

  3. I read that Obama is also a lefty? Is that true? Also there are some famous lefties that people aren’t aware of like Truman, Jay Leno, Oprah, Julia Roberts and Jimi Hendrix. Go lefties- totally creative and using the right side of the brain.

  4. If you know people who are part of big companies in your town ask around because my uncle helped me to find a scholarship. Local companies like to give to charities and to people in town and some of them get to put that in the newspaper or hang it in their store. It was 200 dollars and it helped me out because I didn’t have to pay it back.

  5. My lefty friends are creative and think differently than righties. They approach problems in a very different way and aren’t traditional. I did read that lefty guys have a shorter life span than righties which didn’t make sense to me. Maybe if you are creative you are impulsive or something.
