The Hunter College School of Social Work is a public institution of learning that offers many different means of obtaining a Masters of Social Work degree. The college is a New York City Social Work school that specifically works with urban communities through support of social agencies. Hunter College has ties to numerous social agencies, which helps to assist students with placement according to their area of specialty.
The school of Social Work was established in 1958 and has a Masters of Social Work (MSW) program that is accredited through the Council on Social Work Education. The MSW curriculum offers two different levels. The foundation year is meant to help students have a wide range of knowledge and expertise. In the Advanced year, students can expect to become advanced in their knowledge and competency in their field of practice.
A Hunter Social work degree has a curriculum based on five different areas of professional development. The first area of professional development is Social Welfare Policy and Services. Social Welfare Policy and Services is a two-course sequence that delves into the logistics of the Welfare system. The second area of development is Human Behavior and The Social Environment. Human Behavior and The Social Environment is a three-course sequence with electives that looks specifically on issues of diversity as addressed by the person in the situation. Stages of development are discussed in relation to environmental factors that may impact social functioning.
The third area of development starts the establishment of social work practice methods. Social work practice methods are taught through the Foundations of Social Work Practice course. Students are also required to major in one of four social work practice methods.
The fourth area of development is Social Work Research. Social Work Research is a two-sequence course that works with problem formulation, measurement, sampling, design, and data collection in relation to real practice experiences. The fifth and final area of development is Field Education. Field education is a two-to-four semester sequence that consists of on-site social work practice that’s supervised in a social setting, such as a social agency. Training is under the supervision of a field instructor and overseen by the Field Education Department.
Potential students also have the option to specialize in a field of practice in their second year. The School recognizes six general areas of specialization. These six areas of specialization are: Adults, Older Adults and Families; Children, Youth and Families; Health and Mental Health; Work, Employment and Rehabilitation; Community Development, Prevention and Social Justice; and New Populations and Emerging Issues in Social Work Practice. This field of practice is an option that must be discussed the year prior to their specialization with their faculty advisor.
The Hunter College School of Social Work is a college that is part of the City University of New York system. The school publicly acknowledges and is proud of their cultural diversity, especially in relation to their work in urban areas. The college works closely with social agencies and qualifies graduate students to show a dedication to social change by equipping graduates with the knowledge to make sound decisions and contribute professionally in a consistently dynamic world. What a great opportunity to study in NYC
and get your degree in New York with it’s wide variety of new experiences in the city. Other opportunities for msw programs in new york include nyu school of social work as well as hunter school of social work and columbia msw program.
I’ve been thinking about going to social work school in Manhattan and know Hunter is very competitive. It seems like the perfect place to learn and get the msw because of the diverse population. Not sure though if I can get in.
