Barry University School Of Social Work

barry university school of socialwork Barry University School of Social Work is located in Miami Shores, Florida and offers BSW, MSW, and PhD programs to students. The BSW program requires students to complete a volunteer service worth 75 hours and one practice course during their junior year, and a field placement of 480 hours and three practice courses during their senior year. The purpose of the BSW program is to give students a strong foundational understanding of the social work field and prepare them for a more advanced graduate program.

Barry also offers an MSW degree program that can be completed in two years of full-time study. This 60-credit program is known as a ‘clinical school,’ meaning that all students who enroll at Barry get a clinical background, unlike other schools that give students a choice between direct and indirect practice. All students are trained in social policy, research methods, and social work practice with families and individuals. Field education is required for all students in the MSW program, which includes 448 hours in the foundation year and 480 hours in the concentration year. Students may also enroll in the program part-time, which can be completed in 7 or 8 semesters. The full-time program is offered at the Miami Shores campus, and part-time programs are offered at Miami Shores and Palm Beach.

Barry University also offers students the opportunity to earn their Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work in a total of less than five years. Students submit an application to the graduate program in their senior year and must have at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA to enroll in the program. They then can complete the MSW in seven months, including field internships. Students who have a BSW from another accredited institution are able to enroll in the advanced standing program and earn their MSW in two semesters.

Students at Barry University also have the opportunity to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work (Ph.D). Interested applicants must have at least two years of professional experience, have an MSW degree from an accredited institution, and have career goals to work in research or teaching. Barry University’s Ph.D. program offers a schedule convenient for those who are already employed, provides a focus on close collaboration between students and faculty, and small classes.

Barry University’s Ph.D. curriculum includes 49 credit hours, which includes research and methodology courses as well as courses specialized to students’ interests. Students must fulfill a teaching requirement by instructing a BSW or MSW class that fulfills 3 credit hours. Students must also complete 500 hours worth of research over two or three semesters, and must complete and defend a dissertation to peers and faculty.

According to the school’s website, over ninety percent of students receive funding and tuition discounts including scholarships for social worker school. The school was also also ranked according to the US News and World Report the top school for ethnic diversity on campus in the south for master’s degree schools.

I have been browsing craigslist and job sites and see that bsw jobs are available in the south florida area for case management in the fort lauderdale area regularly.

  1. My grandson got his msw from Barry University School of Social Work and it is a good school. My neice is looking into Nova U for the bsw program- it is in fort lauderdale and I think near the airport. She likes fort lauderdale better as a place to live.
